The Department has five PhD scholarships available to appropriately qualified applicants to undertake a full time PhD degree in 2010. The scholarships are associated with three separate Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects.
The scholarships are available to domestic and international applicants who have an Australian Bachelor degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline as defined in the project description.
The scholarships offer a tax-free stipend at $22,500 (indexed annually) for a period of 3.5 years (subject to satisfactory progress).
Successful applicants will be based at Macquarie University in the Philosophy Department and in association with the Centre for Cognitive Science and the Centre for Research in Social Inclusion.
Cotutelle and joint PhD candidature supervision arrangements are possible, especially (but not only) with partner universities in France, Germany and the UK.
Successful applicants will be able to take up their scholarship and commence their studies as soon they have satisfied the admission requirements of Macquarie University.
ARC Discovery Project 1: Causation (2 PhD scholarships available)
These scholarships are associated with Prof. Peter Menzies’s project 'Causes that Make a Difference'. Applicants should propose thesis projects that relate centrally to the philosophical investigation of causation. Enquiries are to be directed to Peter Menzies (peter.menzies@mq.edu.au).
ARC Discovery Project 2: Agency and Addiction (1 PhD scholarship available)
This scholarship is associated with Prof. Jeanette Kennett’s project 'Addiction, moral identity and moral agency: Integrating theoretical and empirical approaches’. The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of the project but especially in testing and refining philosophical accounts of the elements of moral agency and the effects of addiction on agency, character, self-control and responsibility against the findings and predictions of addiction neuroscience, and our own empirical study of users. Enquiries are to be directed to Jeanette Kennett (jeanette.kennett@mq.edu.au).
ARC Discovery Project 3: Philosophical Anthropology / Philosophy of Work (2 PhD scholarships available)
These scholarships are associated with Dr Jean-Philippe Deranty’s and A/Prof. Nicholas Smith’s project ‘Work and Self-development: a philosophical reappraisal’. This project has a strong international collaborative dimension, with leading researchers from France (Christophe Dejours and Emmanuel Renault) also involved. Applicants should propose thesis projects that focus either on conceptions of work in the history of philosophy or on understandings of work that inform the contemporary quality of work debate (especially in Australia). Enquiries are to be directed to either Jean-Philippe Deranty (jp.deranty@mq.edu.au) or Nicholas Smith (nicholas.smith@mq.edu.au).
