Postgraduate Funding

Scholarships

There is now quite a wide range of scholarships available to support research study. Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are a common source of funding for research postgraduates who are citizens of Australia or New Zealand, but Macquarie University has a number of other awards on offer (including awards for international students) which provide the same rates of funding. For details of these see the section on scholarships at the HRDU website: http://www.research.mq.edu.au/students. Generally speaking, to be eligible for a scholarship you need a first class honours degree or its equivalent (eg a masters degree with research component). Please talk to Dr Jean-Philippe Deranty and/or your supervisor for advice of maximising your chances of being awarded an award.

Research Support Schemes

Monies are available from 1) the Research Office of the University, 2) the Division of SCMP, and 3) the Philosophy Department to help cover the cost of research expenses. Details can be found at: http://www.scmp.mq.edu.au/hdr/hdr_management.html

For further information on funding opportunities in the Department ask either your supervisor or the Philosophy postgraduate convenor, Prof Peter Menzies, W6A 725, telephone 9850 8876.

Employment Opportunities

There are considerable opportunities for paid teaching work within the Department. Postgraduates are commonly employed as casual tutors or research assistants for various members of staff. The demand for tutors and research assistants depends on the availability of funding: in some years we have more work than those seeking it, in other years not enough work to go around. You will be sent a notification of vacancies (usually well in advance of the start of semester) and you should also let your supervisor know if you are interested in tutoring and/or research assistant work.
