Department of Philosophy
Funding and Support
The Philosophy Department provides funds to support essential research activities throughout each student’s candidature, based upon the Faculty of Arts policy on infrastructure support for higher degree research candidates (see http://www.arts.mq.edu.au/for/new_and_current_hdr_candidates/support_for_research/funding_and_grants).
The Philosophy Department considers attendance and presentation of work at conferences, both local and international, as an essential part of research training. Students are encouraged and supported to attend two conferences during their candidature as detailed below. Certain materials (eg books) may also be essential to research.
Other activities may be essential depending upon the nature of the research and these will be considered on a case by case basis, for example engaging a temporary external supervisor for specific expertise, or spending time at an international centre of excellence.
Essential research activities should be planned over the candidacy of the student and discussed with supervisors, who will need to approve the planned expenditures, as will the Departmental Higher Degree by Research Director (Prof. Wendy Rogers) and the Head of Department. In particular, supervisors should assist students in determining what is essential and what is supplementary to their research. The plan should be recorded using the relevant budget template.
Provision of funding will be dependent upon satisfactory academic progress and, as per Faculty policy, students must submit a report on previous funding before any further requests will be considered.
NOTE: this source of funding may be supplemented by application to the Postgraduate Research Fund (PGRF) http://www.research.mq.edu.au/students/current_students/pgrf which provides up to $4000 for research activities that are supplemental to the essential research.
A typical pattern of departmental funding for postgraduate research activity over the course of candidature is given below.
Year 1 (contingent upon satisfactory completion of commencement program)
- Provision of computer for the duration of candidacy: choice of desk top computer (for use in office) or lap top
- Essential books
- Attendance at one conference in Australasia such as the AAP or ASCP (note the Faculty requirement for presenting a paper is waived in year 1)
Years 2 - 3.5 (dependent upon satisfactory academic progression and reporting of previous conference attendance)
- Attendance at one international conference at which the student is presenting a paper
- Essential books
- Cost of thesis production
Activities that will not be supported include:
- Extended visits to international centres where these are supplementary rather than essential to the student’s research. (Such visits may be partially funded through the PGRF scheme).
- Attendance at courses and summer schools except where these are for the student to obtain skills essential to the completion of the research
